I agree with herbal chemist's "seeing luminaries" or something along those lines anyway, because if you look at the work, all the other colours are "dead", or at best neutral, and the blue stands out as being somewhat more alive, and therefore seeing, despite the figure verging on the robotic.

The picture is called Gespenst eines Genies - the original text includes references to specific works, basically abbreviated titles, after the following words: Andacht (Heilige), Pathos (Pathetiker), Versunkenheit (Versunkenheit) and Sehstrahlen (Gespenst). I deleted them as they are not part of the translation and refer to the illustrations that will be included but, yes, probably useful information! (Closed eyes are also associated elsewhere in the text with introspection, the mind’s/inner eye etc.)

Are you sure you have the right painting? As far as I can see, there isn't one called simply Gespenst.

piercing vision, penetrating sight...cosmic vision...the eyes are the only source of light (both from the viewer's as well as from the subject's perspective) in the portrait. A similar intensity is in the painting Senecio (1922) and in Cat and Bird (1928), but Klee didn't paint SO many faces.

However, I think that the "Sehstrahlen" in your text is poetic and should convey the symbolism.
