Hello everyone,

I'm translating the English version/translation of the book Künstliche Intelligenz für Sales, Marketing und Service (AI in Marketing, Sales and Service) by Peter Gentsch. And sometimes the English in the book seems a bit strange to me.

The author talks about Amazon wharehouse robots.

This is the German original:
In der Annahmestelle wird die Ware der Lieferanten entgegengenommen. Dort versieht die Software jedes Produkt mit einem Code, um es wieder auffindbar zu machen. Anschließend wird die Ware „chaotisch“ in Regale des Lagers verteilt – da, wo es gerade Platz findet. Dabei ist das Ziel, Artikel an mehreren Orten in der Halle zu finden, um Laufwege kurz zu halten. Das Bestell- und Lagerverwaltungssystem weiß genau, wo sich die einzelnen Artikel befinden und auf welchem Weg sie diese optimal befördern. Sobald eine Bestellung durch das Computersystem entgegengenommen wird, bewegt sich der elektronisch ausgerüstete Kommissionierer zu dem Regal, in dem sich die Pro- dukte befinden, und hebt diese an, um sie dann an die gewünschte Packstation zu bringen. Dabei gibt das System den nächsten genauen Standort des Regals und die kürzeste Strecke zur Station bekannt. In der Packstation ***werden die Regale abgelegt****, sodass der Mitarbeiter die gewünschten Produkte entnehmen und verpacken kann.

This is the English translation:
At the point of acceptance, the goods are accepted from the delivery man. There, the software gives each product a code for it to be found again. After that, the goods are placed “chaotically” on the warehouse shelves—wherever there happens to be a space for them. The aim of this is to be able to find articles at several places in the warehouse to keep walking distances as short as possible. The ordering and warehouse management system knows exactly where the individual articles are and what the best way is to transport them. As soon as the computer system receives an order, the electronically equipped commissioner moves to the shelf where the products are located and lifts them up to then take them to the desired packing station. In the process, the system informs of the nearest place on the shelf and the shortest distance to the station. At the packing station, ***the shelves are put down*** so that the staff can take the products needed and pack them.

And let me explain what seems difficult to me (I will comment on the English text):

First the text says: "the electronically equipped commissioner moves to the shelf where the products are located and lifts them up to then take..." From this sentence, it is obvious to me that this commissioner lifts the products - lifts them up.

But at the end of the paragraph the text says: "At the packing station, the shelves are put down so that the staff can take the products needed..."

So, if the commissioner lifts up the products, it is unclear to me why it puts down not the products, but the shelves.

My Russian colleagues think that there is a mistake in the English text and "the shelves are put down" should read as "the products are put down." I'm not totally sure, but I think it contradicts the video.

So I'd like to know what is meant in the German original.

You need to have a more holistic perspective in this context. Ablegen here doesn't describe a single, specific type of movement in the sense of 'dropping' or 'lowering' an item." The technicality is irrelevant; the shelves are simply dropped off by the Kiva robots - that's all that matters:
"The shelves are then dropped off at the packing station in order for an employee to remove and pack the desired products."
