German term or phrase: stechen
The tree root balls of between 40 and 250 centimetres are removed from the ground through "stechen oder graben" (maschinell).

When I think of stechen (ausstechen) I think of "pricking out" small plants/seedlings, but that doesn't work here.
Ideas?

are removed from the ground with a tree spade or by digger

see Google for "tree spade". I think the "machinelles graben" is simply a digger.

Explanation:
In the link would be the related machinery. In relation to peat it is called cutting with the spade, so would use that here, too... "something like cut or dug from the ground (with machines)"

Pricking out is for young plants (in German "pikieren") where you often have young plants in a tray of small pots which are then planted into larger pots (either on trays again or into individual pots....)
