I didn't have any grade conversion issues when I switched high schools, but I couldn't be "ranked" at the end, which is fine, because such a system is very dog show-like and doesn't mean anything to "outsiders" :) Best-in-Show: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valedictorian
Yes, you're right, it's grade points, except for the last numerical value--could never get used to the changes in the last two years of school (always thought they were unnecessary).
I don't think Gesamtbewertung looks anything like a course average/final grade. I agree that it's not a great choice though, because these don't appear to be grades but grade points (awarded).
You can't use "course average"; that'll get you back to square one because that's the total: "Schools must: (1) have a grading task which calculates a course average named Final Grade (2) set state reported indicator on grading tasks for term grades and Final Grade; (3) create a grading task for end of course assessment and set up composite grading associated weight consistently." https://education.ky.gov/districts/tech/sis/Documents/DataSt...
It's final grade = average of term grades (2) + end of course assessment, i.e., written presentation and spoken presentation (see herbalchemist's initial suggestion).
Is probably short for Leistungszeugnisse. I agree that "performance" is dog show-like, so "scores" or "marks" might be better. For Jahresleistung, "course average"? I don't really understand the Abitur structure, but everything seems to be rolled together in the end.
ok, but it is just 1 subject (Seminarkurs) and the grades from 2 semesters/1 school year taken together and divided by 2 (1 grade for every semester, e.g. 12 points in semester 1 and 14 points in semester 2 Jahresleistung: 13 points)
it should be a grade (it's the average grade from 2 semesters/1 school year), but it is empty anyway, because "my" student has not opted for a "Seminarkurs". I have "Achievements in the individual subjects" for Leistungen in den einzelnen Fächern. Is that wrong then in your opinion, because it is a grade and not a comment? Would "results" work better?
Wrong register for a school report. FTSE 100 performance, employee performance review etc, but not student performance (unless it's drama club). 'Achievement' is preferable because it sounds more positive. Is it a comment (achievement) or a number (grade)?
How to translate then "incl. Jahresleistung? I have now: Overall performance --, incl. cumulative grade -- written presentation --, spoken presentation -- (would it be better to use "oral" presentation?
Yes, "grade" can mean "grade level" in the US, but it can also mean "assessment grade." We have the infamous GPA (grade point average). "Mark" is not used, to my knowledge, and has a negative connotation, similarly to "strike."
This looks similar (see Wiki refs below). The hard part may be converting these terms into something countries that don't give the Abitur care about. Starting suggestion: Overall Performance - Comprehension - Written Presentation - Spoken Presentation
Dokumentation has me stumped. You can always fudge that one with 'documentation'. If Gesamtbewertung is overall grade/performance/achievement, maybe Jahresleistung is average grade (academic subjects)?
Yes, there are also entries which do not apply to the grade. Ex. Grades for conduct and participation are not given at course level, but are mentioned well.
I don't think 'colloquium' works. Look at the definition here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colloquium The definition of Kolloquium on this page https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kolloquium is "mündliche Prüfung im Abitur". This used to be known as an oral exam, but that went out of fashion for a couple of reasons, one being the ambiguity of a visit to the dentist, the other being [censored]. In modern languages, we now refer to the 'spoken exam' or 'spoken test'.
Not sure about this, but if you add all the 1-6s and divide by the number of subjects, you get the average grade. I've seen this on German secondary school reports. grade (American) = school year grade (British) = marks awarded

Explanation: Gesamtbewertung ---------- -- inc. Jahresleistung -- u. Dokumentation -- u. Kolloquium
This is a best basis that I can give. The German terms should be somewhere. It may also be helpful to indicate which courses are Leistungskurse.
Total points for grade, based on: / Two-semester coursework / Written presentation / Spoken presentation

Thanks a lot

Asker: We no longer have Leistungskurse, but Kernfächer and they are listed separately. This question only refers to the special achievements, i. e. here the Seminarkurse. They are neither core nor basic subjects.
