German term or phrase: Eigenbetrieb
I have a list of 120 companies that my client wants to actually have translated along with the rest of the document. Several of them are GmbHs or AöRs, and I will plead that they allow the names to remain untranslated. Some are more like separate municipal departments of the city and with others, the legal forms are unclear.

Three or four of the companies are "Eigenbetriebe."

Eigenbetrieb Stadtentwässerung Mannheim, for example. Or Eigenbetrieb Abwasserbeseitigung Verden an der Aller

I've read a bit about what an Eigenbetrieb is but don't know how to combine it with the other bits.

agree  mary austria: This is it. "Eigenbetrieb" means owner-operated, which means the City of Mannheim owns the Stadtentwässerung and runs it as a separate company. Very common practice.

neutral  Ken Cox: 'owner-operated' is used, at least in North America, for 'mom & pop' shops and small businesses, so it may be unintentionally confusing here. A municipal enterprise in the sense of a business is by default owned and operated by the municipality.
