Ziel des Kodex ist es, Verbindlichkeit in der Darstellung der unternehmerischen Verantwortung für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung zu gewährleisten. Die Anwendung ist den Unternehmen überlassen, die erklären, ob und inwieweit sie dem Deutschen Nachhaltigkeitskodex entsprechen („comply or explain“). Die Bundesregierung kündigte Ende April 2012 an, den Unternehmen mit ''''Bundesbeteiligung'''' zu empfehlen, die Anwendung des Kodex zu prüfen.
