English translation:Pollution production
Explanation:
has to be the key, and yes, I agree the English it not all it should be. Or maybe the German...

I think "Schritt" is the wrong word and that the author should have used "programme" - in other words, a "set of" steps. He then apparently assumes we all know what - or where - the greenhouse gas CO² comes from.

Reading between the lines, it seems this company is a very large user of electric power, and the power these "Schritte", or economies, will save will in effect mean a reduction in the output of 172,000 tonnes of CO², which expressed in nuclear terms would mean the production of 245 grams less of highly-toxic nuclear waste - it may possibly refer to the use of nuclear fuel, but I don't THINK so.

Now; I'm no nuclear scientist; it just looks to me to be the likely meaning. If there is a nuclear power agency in Ireland (Eire or north?), you might consider checking with them whether my surmise is right.

Danke Leute! Ihr seid wirklich die Besten! Vielen Dank besonders auch an Johannes für die ausführliche Erklärung. Da ich selbst kein wissenschaftliches Genie bin, kam mir das alles doch eher spanisch vor :) Besonders, da die deutsche Formulierung doch einiges zu wünschen übrig lässt.

Explanation:
Ich meine, dass Deine erste Annnahme stimmt:

This measure lessons environmental pollution through the reduction of CO2 gas emissions by 172,000 tons which is the equivalent of 245 g of highly toxic nuclear fuel.

neutral  Johannes Gleim: This is only correct, if the energy ist entered into the equation. 172,000 tons C0² = y MWh = 245 g U238. Note: This is the qty of fuel, not of waste.

agree  philgoddard: I agree with your explanation, which would actually make a good translation in its own right. The German is badly phrased and needs clarifying.

Explanation:
I agree with the Asker and Michael. My instinct, however, is to simplify the sentence structure a bit by using "or" - see my example below.

Another thought that comes to me is that after describing "alle Maßnahmen", surely 'Schritt' ought to be in the plural? Also reflected below.

For clarity:

These steps reduce the amount of environmental pollution produced by 172 000 tonnes of CO2 gas, or 245g of highly toxic nuclear fuel.

Example sentence(s):
  • These steps reduce environmental pollution by 172 000 tonnes of CO2 gas, or 245g of highly toxic nuclear fuel.
