German term or phrase: klimaneutral produziert und versendet

I hope all language settings are correct now. Thank you a lot for your advice anyways!

My task is to proofcheck/edit the following english translation of the German text as follows:

German source text: "Die Grußkarte wurde aus Umweltpapier hergestellt sowie klimaneutral produziert und versendet."

The english translation is: "This greeting card was manufactured with environmentally friendly paper, and it was produced and sent carbon neutral."

Surprisingly I find "...sent/shipped carbon neutral" much more often than e. g. "sent carbon-neutrally" or "sent on a carbon-neutral basis" or "in a carbon neutral manner". To me the latter three suggestions sound much better and I, at first, doubt the correctness of the english translation (was sent carbon neutral).

Nevertheless, after intensive research on the internet even on british and american or austrlian websites, I, am getting more and more the impression that the english translation "...was sent carbon neutral" is not that bad at all due to the fact that this term has obviously gained a certain popularity even in the academic context and may in fact also be used as an adverb – what one really needs to get used to.

Again, my task is to proofcheck the english translation of the german source text.

Can anyone of you agree (or disagree) on either of the two suggestions?

Thank you very much
Vielen Dank

Kindest regards

Simone Reiter

English translation:produced and sent (out) carbon neutral.
Explanation:
FWIW, if I were proofing this passage, I'd leave it as it is. After all, your research has shown you it is not an uncommon expression, and semantics aside, it can only get more popular. Then in the course of time, we'll wonder why we didn't always use it. It says what it means and as languages evolve, isn't that what it's all about?

If you are desperate to make an alteration, you could insert (out).

neutral  TechLawDC: "sustainable" has to do with renewable techniques. Its criteria have nothing to do with climate change, strictly speaking. (At least, nothing specific to do with climate change -- obviously if life becomes intolerable, or oceans cover nearly all arable
1 min
-> I think sustainable has above all to do with saving resources. In that respect the term comes pretty close to the general public's understanding of 'klimaneutral', i.e. being easy on the environment and not contributing to climate change.

neutral  Lancashireman: In an ideal world, all conditions will be sustainable.

agree  Dr Lofthouse: I'd use 'environmentally-friendly' instead of 'environmentally benign'
41 mins
-> I know for a fact that USEPA routinely uses "environmentally benign" in its regulatory arms and research arms. See "Discussion".

neutral  Lancashireman: 'benign' best reserved for non-cancerous growths

-> See USEPA reference. I know for an ABSOLUTE FACT that USEPA prefers the term to "environmentally friendly". "Benign" does not mean that it helps but that it essentially does not harm.

Tried to stick close to the original but options that do not include the word climate might be possible as well.

production and distribution with climate neutral footprint

Explanation:
Our name is our concept. Across geographical and cultural boundaries we identify and develop climate protection projects in developing and emerging countries to offset carbon emissions. This allows individuals and companies to reach a climate neutral carbon footprint and to make a sustainable contribution towards more climate protection.

Carbon neutrality, or having a net zero carbon footprint, refers to achieving net zero carbon emissions by balancing a measured amount of carbon released with an equivalent amount sequestered or offset, or buying enough carbon credits to make up the difference. It is used in the context of carbon dioxide releasing processes, associated with transportation, energy production and industrial processes.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carbon_neutrality

A carbon footprint has historically been defined as "the total set of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions caused by an organization, event, product or person
:
Greenhouse gases can be emitted through transport, land clearance, and the production and consumption of food, fuels, manufactured goods, materials, wood, roads, buildings, and services.[3] For simplicity of reporting, it is often expressed in terms of the amount of carbon dioxide, or its equivalent of other GHGs, emitted.

Reference information:
To be certified as climate-neutral, a product has to demonstrate that the CO2 emissions related to it have been compensated for. A full life-cycle analysis includes three levels of emissions: those that stem from the production process; those caused by shipping, storage and cooling; and those that result from the manufacture of fertilisers and other off-farm-inputs, packaging materials, and related business travel. After the total amount of emissions are calculated, they can be offset with carbon credits obtained through composting projects.

Definition of Carbon Neutral
What Is Carbon Neutral?

The term carbon neutral refers to a zero sum calculation of carbon emissions for any process, product, business, system, person, or even country. In other words, something that is carbon neutral, also referred to as having a net zero carbon footprint or climate neutral, offsets as many carbon emissions as it emits. Carbon neutrality doesn’t refer only to carbon dioxide emissions but to any greenhouse gas emission that contributes to global warming, usually measured in carbon dioxide equivalence.

No reason to not use either of these terms in EN (carbon neutral is more common) - not the same as environmentally friendly etc.
