German term or phrase: Wettbewerbsmechanismen greifen
Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone can help me to understand "greifen" here? It's a report about transitioning to a green economy and how to promote environmental technologies.

Eine Festlegung auf einzelne Anbieter ist in jedem Fall zu vermeiden, um Märkte zu entwickeln, in denen Wettbewerbsmechanismen zwischen Anbietern und ihren Technologien greifen.

The best translation of "greifen" I can come up with here is "overlap", but I'm not sure that it's correct.

This is my attempt:

It is stipulated that individual providers must in all cases avoid developing markets where competitive mechanisms between providers and their technologies overlap.

Any suggestions, or do you think this is ok?
Many thanks!

there is effective competition
Explanation:
I think you could leave out "mechanisms" - it doesn't add anything to the sentence.

I'd say "in which there is effective competition between suppliers and technologies" or "in which suppliers and technologies can compete effectively".

competitive mechanisms are effective / effective competitive mechanisms

Explanation:
greifen = to be effective

This would mean the following in your context:

At any rate [In any case], no specific/single provider must be selected (in order) to develop markets with effective competitive mechanisms between providers/suppliers and their technologies.

(I believe you can even omit the initial part 'At any rate/In any case'.)

... or 'individual providers' or a 'specific sub-set of providers' (plural).

for competition to take root

Explanation:
Effective competition is fine, I guess. This one gets us closer to the imagery of the German term, though.

"To encourage the development of markets and for competition between providers and their technologies to take root, commitments to specific providers should always be avoided."
