German to English translations [PRO] Art/Literary - Esoteric practices
German term or phrase:erschwerend
Dear Colleagues,
I am looking for an elegant translation of "erschwerend" in the following sentence:
Jedoch fällt mir ***erschwerend*** auf, dass sich auch innerhalb eurer spirituellen Lehren die Überzeugung aufgrund des innewohnenden Suchtverhaltens dem Fleisch eurer Freunde gegenüber tief gefestigt haben.
I'm not envious of your task, Thayenga. It looks very difficult, and all the more so because the author is looking for you to stick close to his sentence structure. I hope he or she understands the sort of issues that the translation task has to deal with.

the sentence structure is VERY esoteric, but if it's been channelled or 'received' then I can understand the author wanting to keep it as close to the original as possible. Doesn't make it easier for you though.
I'm advised to maintain the sentence structure and content as much as possible. And this is what makes it difficult! :)

sentence structure? toilsome wearisome arduous I still think, 'What weighs on my mind/soul/being is how deeply ingrained..... but it really depends on the tone you're using.
Well, I believe it means that it makes things more difficult for either the Earth - the teacher - or the humans - the students. Sigh. :) It doesn't appear to be so much a sad task, thing, action, etc,. but rather a difficult one.
"Dismay" then. :) @ Tim well, actually it is the Earth trying to educate the human beings regarding the levels of existence. Maybe i should have posted this early. :O
good point, well made. One could simply say, "However, making things worse, I notice.." A few more sentences would shed more light on the general tone...
... is that it it sounds like the author is not just talking about something making it even worse (whatever "it" is), but is expressing irritation. "Appalling" is an even more emotional term imo. If the tone of the rest of the article is emotional in the original German, then that might not be a problem.
I agree with that. The only problem is we don't know for sure that "appalling/aggravating" hits on the right nuance expressed by 'erschwerend' in this case..
Of course :D It just took me a minute to figure it out ... @ Tim: Now, that makes three of us, b/c I first thought of *Yet, what makes it more aggravating, I notice* Then I tried to make it sound more elegant :D
