A cook is discussing a meal they prepared and is talking about vegetables. The sentence is "Einen gigantischen Kohlrabi der Sorte Riesenschmelz, er ist mindestens so groß wie ein Medizinball, höhlen wir aus und nutzen ihn als Suppenterrine."

Is Riesenschmelz a type of kohlrabi? If so does it have an English name?

I am not completely positive, but “Riesenschmelz” may be synonymous with “Superschmelz”

According to the Wiki, “Superschmelz” is also known as “Gigante”

There are several varieties commonly available, including 'White Vienna',[13] 'Purple Vienna', 'Grand Duke', 'Gigante' (also known as "Superschmelz"), 'Purple Danube', and 'White Danube'.
