I agree - I should qualify my definition. Laid off can mean both fired and no longer being needed for a particular job (and also "in Zwangsurlaub versetzt").

The staff at plant A are affected by the latter - i.e. they are laid off - and are being moved to plant B to avoid "Freistellung"

Which is covered by "surplus volumes" whichever way you look at it.

What the "Mengen" actually are in concrete terms is irrelevant - Mengen/volumes can be raw materials, intermediate or finished products - what matters is that competitors are selling them at knocked-down prices to clear their stocks and reduce their losses due to the insolvency in absolute terms.

And this is what has a negative effect on the sales of (presents a challenge to) the company whose advisory board is reporting.

hängt viel davon ab, um welche Art von Unternehmen es sich bei XY handelt. Falls dies ein Abnehmer von Spanplatten (z.B. Möbelfabrik) war, der nun in Konkurs gegangen ist, dann kann man davon ausgehen, dass manche Spanplattenanbieter auf unverkauften Beständen sitzen geblieben sind, die sie nun billig auf den Markt werfen. Aber ohne Hintergrundinformation ist das alles Spekulation.

Freigeworden in the sense of ordered by customers who subsequently cancelled their orders. i.e. they were earmarked for sale, but the sale fell through - possibly leading to insolvency.

Or, stocks of products that have been produced but not sold. Also called "stock in hand".

Almost all manufacturers produce an extra "buffer" of stock to meet short-notice demand - which obviously didn't come about in this case.

If the company is attempting to market them at dumping prices, it is highly probable that they are finished products

vielleicht ist es auch nur sprachlich merkwürdig ausgedrückt.
Evtl. "surplus timber", also das Holz, dass nicht mehr zu Spanplatten verarbeitet wird, weil das Unternehmen den Betrieb eingestellt hat. Wenn es sich um den Abverkauf bereits produzierter, aber noch nicht verkaufter Spanplatten handelt, finde ich den Begriff "freigeworden" in diesem Zusammenhang äußerst merkwürdig.

Da muss ich wirklich noch ergänzen. Es geht bei den freigewordenen Mengen um ein anderes Spanplattenwerk, das diese Mengen zu Dumpingpreisen auf den Markt wirft. Um welche Mengen es sich genau handelt, wird nicht erwähnt. Da aber explizit von Spanplattenwerken die Rede ist, gehe ich davon aus, dass auch nur Holzmengen gemeint sind.

einzigen Satzes eine Entscheidung hinsichtlich einer passenden Übersetzung zu treffen.
Ist die Firma XY ein anderes Spanplattenwerk (aus dessen Konkursmasse Platten verkauft werden), ein Holzlieferant oder etwas anderes? Geht es um Holzmengen oder um sonstige Mengen?
Im ersten Satz könnte ich mir "surplus (amount)" bzw. "unsold" vorstellen, im 2. Fall evtl. "no longer required at ..." bzw. "no longer needed", wobei ich davon ausgehe, dass die Mitarbeiter noch nicht entlassen wurden.
