German term or phrase: Inselvielfalt
Context:

"In den Leewards sind es die British Virgin Islands, die mit ihrer geschützten Inselvielfalt zu kürzeren Tagestörns einladen."

I'm thinking along the lines of "with their protected diversity of islands", but not really happy with that.

exceptional diversity
Explanation:
I think "geschützt" may be a kind of attempt at explaining what Leeward means. Also, you can't really have a translation which includes the word "islands", because then you're saying "the British Virgin Islands are islands". So I'd say something like "In the Leewards, the exceptional diversity of the British Virgin Islands makes them ..."

marvelously diverse protected islands

Explanation:
I would turn "Vielfalt" into an adjective in the translation to avoid having to write "protected diversity".

Diverse protected islands

Explanation:
I know that diverse and protected sounds like too many adjectives, but try reading it out loud and pronouncing it like "diverse, protected islands" so that protected islands acts as a single unit and diverse modifies that unit.

I essentially agree with Stefanie, and I am not trying to upstage her by making my own post, but I don't understand where marvelous comes from.
