spontaneous contribution

Explanation:
But I would need a tiny bit more context to make an intelligent guess. However, this makes sense, I think.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks. I'm not sure if it can be considered spontaneous because it is on the agenda... but perhaps it was spontaneously added to the agenda. Unfortunately I don't have much more context.

introduction/introductory speech

Explanation:
'Impuls' here doesn't mean spontaneous. Here it is a means to trigger a certain thought process or it introduces a topic.

agree  philgoddard: I'm half convinced - but do you have any references?// Thanks. I have a feeling there is an English term, but I can't think of it.

-> www.bmfsfj.de/.../PRM-4398-Materialie-Familienpolitik-Nr.,propert... und www.ramsa-deutschland.org/.../impulsbeitrag-zu... would be examples in German for what an 'Impulsbeitrag' can be. However, there might be a more 'to the point' English term. :-)

agree  Johanna Timm, PhD: yes: maybe also in the sense of inspirational, thought-provoking

Keynote speech

Explanation:
I'm not 100% sure without full context but this is definitely the term we'd use for the main speech which sets the tone for the rest of the discussion at a conference or workshop.

Apologies if a reference from wikipedia is not appropriate (I'm new and not clear on the rules) but it does sum up what I know keynote to mean!

agree  Lancashireman: This is the English term that Phil Goddard couldn't think of. I sat through one of these once. Someone I spoke to afterwards described the speech as "inspirational".

-> Thanks Andrew :) In my experience you have to be in the right frame of mind to be inspired by a keynote speech...

Explanation:
Or maybe stimulatory.

Have we had this option? If so I've missed it.

agree  Horst Huber (X): Now we know it for certain, thank you. But what would a native speaker of English say, well, spontaneously? Keynote speeches are often expected to present the conventional wisdom.
