If the Impuls-Beitrag is intended to provoke discussion immediately then it could be a springboard for discussion. However, this term wouldn't work if this part of the workshop is a presentation/speech with no real discussion element.
I know this is also the name of proprietary software which isn't ideal.
I know this is a radical suggestion given that so many people have tried to find an English phrase for this. I simply don't think there is a direct analogue in English. My experience of conferences is that there are keynote and/or plenary speakers and/or workshops either with a panel of individual papers and a discussant or a roundtable etc.
I've had a look at a number of conference agendas and they all seem to have multiple keynote speeches. I was wondering what the text was that you have translated as keynote speech already? (Largely for reference rather than to query it!)
Some conferences also use terms like 'focus' or 'insight' but I don't see how that would fit the case at hand.
I also wondered (coming at it from left field) whether 'Impuls-Beitrag: Handel, Standards und Entwicklung' could actually be the title of the speech rather than Impuls-Beitrag being a descriptor. I don't see how this could work but thought I'd throw it out there!
Hi Andrew, it is not at the beginning. There is a keynote speech at the beginning and this comes in the middle. it is "motivational'" in some way, but in the context I have the feeling that "incentive" might be a better fit... but "incentive speech"?
inspirational, throught-provoking, yes! we now also know that there are other speeches before the Impulsbeitrag (that's why introductory does not apply anymore), but Usch's interpretation of the term is still correct.
What makes you think that this comes "at the beginning of the event", Lisa? The organisers will generally slot this into the programme at the convenience of the distinguished guest speaker.
Ugh, this is hard! These ideas are quite good (I think we've got the meaning down), but I'm not sure I've found one that sounds natural in the context. Oh, translating! ;)
I know is not spontaneous or spur of the moment. It is a presentation which is supposed to trigger a certain thought process or to introduce the audience to a certain topic.

The Beitrag is not impromptu, it seeks to, to prompt --- thought, discussion, maybe even action. Far from being brought on by an impulse, it aims to provide the "Impuls".
I'm wondering if they mean 'incentive' or 'motivation' with 'Impuls'... "incentive speech"?
