I agree with your answer. Project purpose seems to make the most sense. I simply can't make sense of "interpretation" in this context. How does one interpret a goal? I also think that it simply sounds like they are defining what the purpose/mission/goals of the project is/are. I like using language that is easy to understand, and project purpose fits the bill!

Another example of fake Denglish. An 'interpretation' (Auslegung) of the goal would allow several permutations and thereby negate the body text.

What they mean is 'defining the goal'.
