My entry was addressed to Darin as I felt being criticised by him considering me a bad translator. Contrary, I always tries to find the technical term with the specific meaning first and paraphrases only if this looks being impossible. With "sauerglanzverzinkt" we had exactly this problem and I searched all (for the moment) available sources for the correct term, but in vain. Even the reference provided by herbalchemist didn't contain it, except for a rough circumscription. I could only base a proposal on it and asked the peers to improve it. Instead of this I was criticised for using his findings. Was this wrong? Shouldn't I help you?

Hope this statement will calm all emotions and the discussion will end.

Nobody was talking about "a law", and your list already demonstrates that you don't understand the issue. A house does not always equal a Haus; why else would we have other terms (from shack to buidling to mansion. And try translating Zweifamilienhaus into US English)? And these terms are defined differently in different cultures.
In order to be a good translator, you need to know what something actaully "is" in the source culture in order to be able to render it into the language of the target culture/the target audience.
Granted, tech terms are different, but even here, your examples indicate that there can be 2 different terms in language A for one in language B. Tanslators need to know the subject matter, and then pick the correct term.
My problem was that, while I know cars, I don't know the details of every corrosion protection process. So I was hoping someone would. I had read most of the references already, but I needed confirmation for "a person skilled in the art".

There is no and should be no banner "translation does not equal transliteration" as recommended for proz.com. Literal translations can be as good or even better than transliterations, esp. if it is a specific technical term.

Such terms are literally translated and correct (plating does not equal to "Beschichten", but can be used under some circumstances, as with this question). No need to circumscibe, but for rare term's it may be difficult or impossible to retrieve the correct translation. Then a transcription may help to covey the sense.

The mantra, "Translation does not equal transliteration" should be on a banner throughout the KudoZ site.
And the goal of the whole project is for translators to help each other, so I hope to have helped everyone involved here.

You are right in saying the Germans would be as precise as possible while defining special terms (to avoid any confusion or mixing-up) and that the brightness property is therefore included, differently than in English, where some properties are sometimes regarded being redundant.

In fact, another similar term "glanzverchromt" is translated only by "chromium-plated", presupposing that it's brightness is an inherent property, unnecessary to be stressed.

BTW, being on holidays I have only limited possibilities and time to search more deeply for exact terms and are more liable for typing errors on the smartphone than with my office equipment. I was therefore glad that herbalchemist found a reliable reference which he could use for a more specific proposal. Unfortunately he didn't exploit the whole article, so I felt being obliged to do this in lieu of him, in order to help you.

@Johannes:
a) translation does not equal transliteration, and
b) the sources provided by the answering parties document abundantly & clearly that "Glanz" is a function of the zinc's acidity. I have ventured to assume that this part is thus redundant (plus, this is not a part customers will ever see). As has been said elsewhere by someone else, German can have a tendency to overdefine terms (not to mention scrunching everything together into one word, which need not work the same way in another language – see a))
c) your entry was simply not idiomatic EN, had at least one typo, and should not be in the glossary as it was – you yourself have actually questioned its correctness somewhere above in the discussion

No problem with "galvanized [in acidic zinc solution]", but what about "glanz", the most problematic particle of "sauerglanzverzinkt"? How did you integrate "bright"?

My apologies to Darin & herbalchemist; your contributions are much appreciated, but ProZ does not allow splitting points. I made it very clear that the wording was not acceptable & entered a different EN version in the glossary yesterday. I have also corrected Johannes' entry this morning. I hope this will calm the waters. Thanks again for everyone's efforts (I know how it feels; happened to me all the time when I was still actively answering questions)

"electroplating" is a good substitute covering both "galvanization" and "plating". But how to use that term in the phrase? Your props als are appreciated.

Does not excuse your actions. This is indeed a ridiculous glossary entry.

I would just say "zinc-plated," because that's what I've seen in articles written about coatings for magnesium gearbox housings made by German auto manufacturers.

As native English speakers you are invited to improve the wordings. I am not as dexterous in English as you and proposed my wordings as last resort. If you post a better collocation, I can modify the entry accordingly. I think the asker would be glad about, too.

I found the collocation "Cast iron MUST be coated in an acidic zinc plating solution" eloquent and modified it to match the asked term. I also agree that "plating", "coating" and "galvanization" are more or less synonym, but each term has a different connotation. As plating can be processed differently, I would stress the electrolytic plating method.

I am not sure what you are looking for as reliable documentation. Technical users tend to keep descriptions short and sweet, so I would avoid using both "galvanized" and "plated" in the same phrase. See my second reference for the reason I selected "plated".

In any case you would not say "galvanized in ... solution." Nor would you use "brightly" in the adverb form—it's just "bright."

And please do not use "acidid" or put it in the glossary.

Thanks everone for contributing; @herbalchemist: model does not matter (and is confidential, anyway) @Johannes: I would have certainly done that if it were an option.
I will leave this up until a veteran of either trade sees it; it's definitely galvanizing with the bath being on the acidic side.
However, given the client and conditions, I would prefer to have the English term documented somewhere reliable – I think it's one of those you either know, or you don't. It doesn't help that it was almost 40 years ago...Thanks again for your efforts (I am sure we all know more about galvanizing now than we ever wanted to - hope it will come in handy at another time).

Acid zinc is brighter, but alkaline zinc offers measurably better throwing power, which can be important for rack plated work...
For practical purposes there should usually be little difference to the end user between a zinc plated part that was successfully plated in acid zinc vs. cyanide zinc. But please review the previous discussion on this thread.
