I'm fairly sure this is a woman's name, as it occurs once as Maria Jän, and once alone.

On the male parallel,
Ja equals Jacob/Jakob,
Joh equals Johannes/Johan,
Joa equals Joachim
Jos equals Joseph

I know that, in this document, the umlaut is occasionally used for the "fill in any random missing letters" that the overstrike usually signifies.

Could this mean Johanna? Jana? Any other J names?
It can't mean Jane, not in a German speaking church and area.

English translation:Janna
Explanation:
I've translated/deciphered/transliterated many genealogical documents, incl. those with Sütterlin script and know that the overstrike sometimes also denotes the duplication of the letter, in which case I would opt for "Janna" (dutch version of Johanna). Would that be a possibility, based on the info you have on birth places etc?

I've decided to offer the client both Janna and Johanna as expansions on this one. This was difficult, as I have no adult women with J-names at all, so no family lineages to trace through naming patterns as I did for the other 2 questions.
My thanks for all the suggestions.

gets several hundred googles as a woman's name, if her name was really Jänecke or some such like, you'll never be able to know....
