Beim Turmkonzept mit offenen volumetrischen Receivern wird Umgebungsluft von einem Geblase durch den Receiver gesaugt, auf den die Heliostaten ausgerichtet sind. Als Receiver-Materialien kommen ein Drahtgeflecht, keramischer Schaum
oder metallische bzw. keramische Wabenstrukturen zum Einsatz. Der Receiver erhitzt sich
durch die Solarstrahlung und gibt die Warme an die hindurchgesaugte Umgebungsluft ab.
Die angesaugte Luft ki.ihlt die Receiver-Vorderseite. Sehr hohe Temperaturen entwickeln
sich nur im lnneren des Receivers. Dieser so genannte volumetrische Effekt reduziert die
Strahlungswarmeverluste. Die auf Temperaturen von 650 bis 850 Grad Celsius erwarmte
Luft gelangt in einen Abhitzekessel, der Wasser verdampfl und tiberhitzt und somit einen
Dampfturbinenkreislauf antreibt. Bei Bedarf !asst sich diese Kraftwerksvariante uber einen
Kanalbrenner mit anderen Brennstoffen nachfeuern.
