German term or phrase: tragender Untergrund
Abb. 2 zeigt einen ***tragenden Untergrund***, auf den ein hellroter Hintergrund gedruckt ist, der teilweise von einer dunkelblau gekennzeichneten Farbe bedeckt ist.

I am pretty confident that "background" is the correct translation for "Untergrund", however, I am scratching my head when it comes to "tragend". Anyone out there with some experience in printing technology/lingo?

Thanks!

"Tragend" might be redundant. Another word for "Untergrund" is "Trägerschicht" or "Trägermaterial".

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks for your suggestion! "Substrate" definitely is the correct translation for "Untergrund", however, as I mentioned in the discussion section, I cannot omit "tragend", hence I'll go with "carrier substrate" :)
