Asker, "funnded by millions" would mean that millions of people funded it, which is probably not the case. (Unless they are taxpayers...!)

Also, yes, it should be multimillion(one word)-dollar, though I cannot get used to writing multimillion in one word. That there's a hyphen missing in the title of the article to which I linked below is an AP Stylebook issue, I believe. You don't use any hyphens for actual numbers. E.g.;
"Note that a hyphen is not used to join the figures and the word 'million' or 'billion,' even in this type of phrase,

The president submitted a $300 billion budget."

I think some oeople take that to mean that you shouldn't use a hyphen even if the amount is rather vague.

Adding a hyphen doesn't turn it into one word, Thomas =) You don't need the hyphen in Millionenprojekt, but you can write this one in two words and add that to make it clearer. However, the issue is that the asker's term is bad German. A Millionenprojekt may be a Projekt für Millionen von Menschen (as Steffen suggested) or Millionen von Euro. Millionen-Forschungsprojekt is a weird collocation that you can find in reference to only one EU project:

Unless this really is local news, it'd be illogical to omit the currency in either language. Also, your example is not OK, IMO: A "million-dollar research project" could be one that cost exactly USD 1 million. Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" is about a USD 1 million box match.

At the link I posted, it's multi-million-dollar.

"Millionen" is part of the compound noun so it needs to be written in one word in German ("Millionen-Forschungsprojekt"). So that's an error in the source text, but quite a popular one (Deppenleerzeichen).

In English you'd usually need the currency to express this in the same way ("a million-dollar research project") - or find another way to express it. (But I assume you will know the currency from the context.)

I think if people were meant, you'd be adding a preposition or a verb. This seems to be a translation from English anyway. Millionenprojekt is right, of course, but Millionen-Forschungsprojekt sounds a bit odd because Forschung doesn't quite work grammatically in the middle of the sentence, IMO.
