German term or phrase: Psychoschiene gefahren
This appears in a comment on social media. I wasn't given the original post that this person is responding to, but the project is for a pharmaceutical company that is launching a new health care initiative.

Full comment:

Something like "did not drive me crazy", maybe? My understanding is that previous physicians were clueless about the illness and it was not until this person met a doctor specializing in rare diseases that he or she was correctly diagnosed.

go down the psychology road

Explanation:
In other words, say it was all in the patient's mind.

agree  Björn Vrooman: Considering the register, "mental" on its own should be fine. Look, I found an old yearbook: 'Favourite Saying What do you think I am, 'Mental or what?'" http://collections.mun.ca/PDFs/collegian/1966_67.pdf

neutral  philgoddard: This is basically the same as my answer, but loses the "Schiene fahren" metaphor.

instead of just referring me/sending me off for psychological evaluation

Explanation:
As I imagine my two medical doctor brothers would say it, not necessarily their patients. In a quick search at Google it turns out that a Crohn's patient wrote on Facebook "my illness is all in my head and as soon as i accept there is nothing wrong with me i will be fine... he has also gone to the extent of referring me for psychological evaluation stunned"

the crazy train

Explanation:
"Until I finally found doctors who looked into the possibility of some rare disease and didn't assign me to the crazy train."

Just a suggestion, if you want to retain a sense of slang. And a reference to Schiene.
