The underlying problem is that researchers are not always the best translators, especially if they're simply forced to translate their own work under the pressure of going global (same if translator and researcher do not communicate effectively).

It is a response to clarify whether a statement by someone else has been interpreted correctly. This is somewhat different from what you asked in your question (movie example).

Am in a rush, but I could take a second look at it later. If this is really Luhmann, you need to be really careful with the word choice. Not sure how many of his books you've read, but he's like the personified recursor, meaning he establishes some terms at the beginning and will then refer to them 100 pages later (ugh). AFAIK, he did have boxes full of notes, all properly sorted, to keep track of his theorizing, but we don't.

I know Luhmann - studied in Bielefeld, so there's no way around him, frankly. I'm not that enamored with his writing, though (and I don't think I'm the only one).

About your:

That's "connecting communication," so these two shouldn't be mixed up.

See p. 25 of the link I posted about what "Anschlusskommunikation" is in the sense of Luhmann. It's actually not that far removed from the explanation I gave.

You see it there, called "4. Selektion" in the picture - that's a response.

I've now established that the term is one used by Niklas Luhmann, occasionally translated as "follow-up communication", occasionally as "connecting communication".
I didn't post the original paragraph because I was specifically looking for standard sociological terms, if such existed. I wanted to check that before I resorted to paraphrasing.

As far as I can see, same article was also published on the website "Psychology Today."

Medienpsychologie or media psychology has "content perceptions" - that's "Medienrezeption" - and "user responses" - that should be "Anschlusskommunikation."

So either you use the direct translation, as some ENS have, or stay close to media psychology terms by saying "user response." Please remember that this is a scientific endeavor, not a shot at the Nobel Prize in Literature. The difference is crucial, for that words in the social sciences carry distinct labels that cannot be reassigned at will. If you do that, you will most likely invalidate the point someone is trying to make.

Maybe I'll give it some more thought. "Follow-up communication" is used in some ENS books (just use Google Books with the term in quotation marks), but it seems as if this was simply a direct translation of the term from German. However, "extended" wouldn't fit the bill, IMO.
