Marketing - Wine / Oenology / Viticulture / Attempt to describe uniqueness of certain wines
German term or phrase: Terroir
It is about an initiative named "terroir f" (small case) standing for Terroir Franken

This term is being used in an attempt to attract tourists or wine-lovers to parts of Franconia. Famous wine varietes and wine-growing communities are asked to establish special (magisch) viewpoints. See the blurb here:

http://www.franken-weinland.de/erlebnis/terroir-f/

I want to be able to explain this in English when I take groups of tourists to our local viewpoint, and for this I need a term for terroir or at least the reassurance that I can use the original French.

In this PPT quite near the beginning there is an attempt to define and translate "terroir" but to be honest I don't really understand it.

Could any winegrowing expert among KudoZ colleagues tell me what terminology to use with tourists who may OR may not have knowledge of oenology?

Perhaps even something like a "unique regional signature" or "essential regional signature"

Thank you, everyone, for shedding some light on this complex topic. I now know what to say when explaining the term and will use an English-sounding approximation to the correct French pronunciation (as in "resterrannt".
