Notes : La percée des mini-ordinateurs et des micro-ordinateurs a ralenti la croissance de ces ordinateurs dont l'utilisation est limitée aux grandes entreprises. Toutefois, ils sont indispensables lorsque des applications exigent une puissance centralisée très élevée. L'emploi du terme anglais « mainframe » est à éviter en français.
