"Con effigie (effigies) si intende un manichino (mannequin) a grandezza naturale realizzato in legno oppure in qualche altro materiale leggero, che, ricoperto da vesti, poteva temporaneamente 'sostituire' una persona; in particolare le effigi potevano prendere il posto del defunto nel corso delle lunghe celebrazioni funebri, ma venivano utilizzate anche in altri contesti cerimoniali. Più raramente nel corso del Medioevo, ma soprattutto all'inizio dell'età moderna, ci si serviva di un simile sostituto nei processi in contumacia. In generale si può dedurre che l'effigie tendeva a essere somigliante alla persona che sostituiva. "
