Definicja z wikipedii:

Das Kunstwollen wurde geprägt von dem Wiener Kunsthistoriker Alois Riegl und wurde zu einem vieldiskutierten Begriff nicht allein in der deutschen Kunstgeschichte, sondern, da das Kunstwollen nur schwer zu übersetzen ist, auch in der internationalen Kunstwissenschaft.

Bis heute ist in der Kunstgeschichte ungeklärt, wieso es zu einem permanenten Stilwandel kommt. Gottfried Semper schlug drei Determinanten vor, die für den Stilwandel konstituierend sind: Zweck, Material und Technik. Etwa eine Generation später widerlegte Alois Riegl die Abhängigkeit des Stilwandels von diesen drei Determinanten, konnte aber selbst keine neue Regel aufstellen: so prägte er das Wort "Kunstwollen" als Notbegriff.
