Denumirea de \"aloe\" provine de la cuvântul arab \"aloeh\" care înseamna în limba araba \"seva cristalina si amara\", iar planta a fost utilizata înca din antichitate, fiind renumita pentru virtutile sale curative. Zur Familie der Aloe Vera Pflanzen zählen über 300 verschiedene Arten, aber nur eine, die Aloe Barbadensis Miller - auch die \"wahre Aloe\" genannt - ist die Pflanze, die für den Menschen am bekömmlichsten ist. Die Wüstenlilie - eine der 700 Lilienarten die eigentlich eher wie ein Kaktus aussieht und der amerikanischen Agave gleicht - wird schon seit einigen tausend Jahren in den verschiedensten Kulturen als Heilpflanze geschätzt.
