Ich verstehe den Unterschied so, dass eine ambulante Behandlung sowohl im Krankenhaus ohne stationären Aufenthalt, als auch in der ärztlichen Praxis, z. B. beim Hausarzt, Internisten, Gynäkologen usw. stattfinden kann.
Ambulatorisch deutet daraufhin, dass es sich um eine nicht stationäre Behandlung in einem Ambulatorium oder einer Poliklinik handelt.

Eigentlich ist ambulatorisch wohl ein typischer Anglizismus, wie der heute übermäßig häufig in der Medizin vorkommt: English "ambulatory" --> keine Ruhigstellung, sondern Mobilisierung, in diesem Fall: mit Kompressionsverband oder -strümpfen versorgt und "herumlaufend" (lat. ambulare).

Das, was wir unter ambulant verstehen, wäre englisch "outpatient" oder ähnlich.

Als Beispiel für die "neudeutsche" Verwendung von ambulatorisch:
