I dont think that the author wanted to say iconography, that´s why I chose the more general term <holy pictures>

Καταρχήν, όταν μιλάμε για αγιογραφία μιλάμε ως επί το πλείστον για βυζαντινή ζωγραφική και μάλιστα *συνήθως* για ένα πολύ συγκεκριμένο παρακλάδι της, τις εικόνες. Τουλάχιστον, όπως χρησιμοποιείται ο όρος σήμερα και όπως χρησιμοποιείται στο κείμενό σου. Είναι πάρα πολύ συγκεκριμένο τόσο ως τεχνοτροπία, ως περιεχόμενο, ως κώδικας αναπαράστασης.

Christian painting, religious painting και τα σχετικά είναι πολύ γενικά και περιλαμβάνουν πράγματα που σε καμία περίπτωση δεν θα μπορούσαν να χαρακτηριστούν "αγιογραφίες" και γι' αυτό εγώ θα τα απέφευγα.

Ο λίγο-πολύ στάνταρ όρος είναι icons, που σημαίνει αγιογραφίες.

"Icons may also be cast in metal, carved in stone, embroidered on cloth, done in mosaic or fresco work, printed on paper or metal, etc. [...] Orthodox icons may never be more than three-quarter bas relief."

Η άλλη λύση, αν δεν θέλεις να πας για κάτι τόσο συγκεκριμένο όσο το icons, είναι ο όρος Byzantine paintings ή Byzantine art που αναφέρεται συγκεκριμένα σε αυτό που λέει το κείμενό σου. Το πρόβλημα με την απόδοση του όρου "αγιογραφία", είναι ότι στα Ελληνικά χρησιμοποιείται -καταχρηστικά ίσως- τόσο για τις εικόνες (icons), όσο και για τις τοιχογραφίες (frescoes).

agree  Viktor Finopoulos: Βεβαίως καταχρηστικά, γιατί το fresco θα έπρεπε να ήτανε "νωπογραφία"

  -> Ναι. Mural είναι η τοιχογραφία κανονικά, αλλά συνήθως οι συγκεκριμένες τοιχογραφίες είναι νωπογραφίες. Και στον ενικό είναι fresco και όχι frescoe, όπως γράφετε εσείς.
