The Rattle Player Explanation: "Kρόταλο" θα μπορούσε να μεταφραστεί ως "rattle". Wikipedia: A rattle is a percussion instrument. It consists of a hollow body filled with small uniform solid objects, like sand or nuts. Rhythmical shaking of this instrument produces repetitive, rather dry timbre noises. In some kinds of music, a rattle assumes the role of the metronome, as an alternative to the drum. In Urdu language, it is famous by the name of "CHANKANA" This instrument was used in the ancient world. Today it plays a role in Cha Cha Cha, tango and jazz. -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 25 mins (2010-08-02 19:50:56 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- http://www.folkways.si.edu/TrackDetails.aspx?itemid=11693 -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 26 mins (2010-08-02 19:51:44 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- http://books.google.es/books?id=a8mOrei86bMC&pg=PA118&lpg=PA... -------------------------------------------------- Note added at 27 mins (2010-08-02 19:53:19 GMT) -------------------------------------------------- http://www.flickr.com/photos/kunitsa/4357304002/ Reference: http://books.google.es/books?id=u6A2ppfTB5MC&pg=PA214&lpg=PA... |

The Rattler Explanation: I would have to say that I very much agree with Mr Bindon. I believe that it is one of those situations where if you don't see the work or read a description of it, then it could be interpreted in many ways. Is it related to the snake or some other animal, is it a musician (as some have said), is it a man on his death bed, or is it something else? If I had no access to the work in any of those ways, I would be tempted to render it as 'The Rattler', as this is more general and, in my opinion, heads in a somewhat likely direction. However, I would roll the dice only in an emergency, if I had no choice, no recourse to other information. I do not condone such an approach, and view it only as a last, desperate resort - there is always the chance that the dice throw wil be way off the mark! |
