It is possible that 'Bafidis' is a not very good (but not uncommon) transliteration of the surname 'Παφίτης'(which I would myself transliterate as 'Pafitis'. This is a very common surname amongst Cypriots as it means originally, perhaps way back in the family's history, 'he who originates from the town of Paphos (on the west coast of the island).
