kapranos goatherd Explanation: This is a guess. Alex's father comes from Greece and there are quite a number of Kapranos families here (in Greece). The word 'kapranos' itself is not Greek. It must be either of Turkish or, more probably, Balkan derivation. The Indo-European root 'kapro' means 'goat' (as in Capricorn) and, most probably, a kapran is a goatherd somewhere. The Turkish çoban (a shepherd, a herdsman) has given us the Greek word for 'shepherd', tsopanos, so kapranos may have a similar origin. |
