Explanation: Most of the references that I have found for the use of the term "οπλοτεχνική" in relation to "σεμινάρια περί οπλοτεχνιχής", on the internet, apply to seminars arranged by the police or Hellenic Coastguard. I therefore consider the phrase, "the use of firearms", to be more suitable than other alternatives in such circumstances.
Dear all, I am very thankful to all of you for this thorough discussion, but I needed a term for "οπλοτεχνική", not for the whole sentence, and this is why I chose Peter's answer. Since I translated the sentence as follows: "This (document) is provided for the purpose of being utilized at a seminar on the use of firearms." I think there is no problem at all. The sentence was given in my question only for providing clarification, not for translating it. I think any professional translator could understand that the chosen answer was referring ONLY to "οπλοτεχνικη". Thank you all. Have a great day!
Yes, I completely agree. To me,too, would be correct if we re-arrange as Peter suggests, i.e. to be used(utilized) in a seminar 'on the use of firearms'. But the whole sentence, taken out of context, threw the meaning into ambiguity. I suggest the Asker takes notice. OK gentlemen, all done and dusted. Have a good day!!!
Thank you, Nick. We could possibly solve the problem by saying, "This (document) is provided for the purpse of being utilized at a seminar on the use of firearms.
Hi, all. Peter is using "use" not to translate "χρήση" but as part of his translation of "οπλοτεχνική". Let us say he means "the expert use of firearms". Because οπλοτεχνική often appears with σκοποβολή, I used "gun handling" because it too often appears along with "marksmanship". But the term "use of firearms" is also quite good, with the disadvantage that, in this particular case, "use" may have to appear twice in the same sentence.
I am not doubting the fact that '' οπλοτεχνική", in Greek, with all the cultural differences and understanding of words and phrases between the two Countries, is or might be equivalent to "firearms". My contention is the attachment of 'the use of', to 'firearms'. As I said before, in MY opinion, which I still maintain, the preposition 'σε' refers to the 'seminar', as it says '.... χρήσης σε σεμινάριο' i.e could be any seminar on anything, in this case it happens to be 'firearms', as the Greeks would say or, indeed, 'firearms/weapons/weaponry' as English people would say. (www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/weaponry). I believe it is one thing to say the 'use in a seminar of firearms' and quite different to say' use of firearms in a seminar'. This is why I brought it up.
"The use of firearms" is a good translation of "οπλοτεχνική", whichever way you look at it and especially if there is any doubt as what the full text in which the term is included refers to. I prefer to do research on the internet before replying to KudoZ questions and every reference I found on the net concerning Greek seminars on "οπλοτεχνική" described the seminars as being arranged by the police or Hellenic Coastguard. I therefore considered "the use of firearms" to be the safest and most suitable choice in the circumstances, and still do.
Εκ των υστερων, εδω ΔΕΝ μιλαει 'για χρησην οπλων'. Λεει, ' η παρουσα...ειναι για σκοπο ΧΡΗΣΗΣ ΣΤΟ ΣΕΜΙΝΑΡΙΟ......, αλλο απο του να πει κανεις ΟΤΙ Η ΠΑΡΟΥΣΑ ΕΙΝΑΙ ΓΙΑ ΧΡΗΣΗ ΟΠΛΩΝ(εδω=USE OF FIREARMS) There is a distinction!!!!!! It is NOT correct, I think, how this was translated, with all due respects to Peter. Have another look at it!!!!
