Jumping Jehosophat, Johnny - be a man! Explanation: Well lots of options here. Linguists call phrases like "Azt a rézfánfütyülődet" "minced oaths" - that is, they are altered versions of other oaths considered blasphemous. Fortunately for your purposes, most of these minced oaths in English are archaic because there was more shame about oaths in the past. I think the "Jehosophat" one fits your period. You will find others on this list (British, but many of these are AE too) http://www.phrases.org.uk/meanings/minced-oath.html |
