Cannot find enough examples of it on google to justify not translating it (not like trompe d'oeil for example)

yes, it does refer to Leonardo. I am not altogether happy with not translating it, as the only example I found was the one offered below, from a German site. However, I think I will have to leave it be.

"rough sketch", but that doesn't really make sense in this particular context. Do you have the complete sentence that goes with the italics?... It might help shed some light.
