This is my interpretation:

the artistic object is not a mere object which is contemplated by the onlooker in a detached and passive way but is a happening in time included in the onlooker's experience of it and therefore it 'happens' time and time again as each person relates to it in their personal way and then becomes a live part of that person's memory and experience of it.
