A case of not seeing the wood for the trees, I fear. The full sentence goes:
"la Galleria [...] si assicurò per le proprie raccolte 'Natura morta con peperoni' e 'Canzone meridionale', mentre Eugenio Montale ne acquistò l’ideale péndant, La confessione."

So, it would follow that the work acquired by Montale was the conceptual/theoretical twin of (one of) these works?

That seems a bit more promising. How does it sound to you folks?

Here I think “ideale péndant” means that there is another version of the artwork, which was acquired by Eugenio Montale.

You say there's no indication of what the work might be a companion piece to, but what does "ne" refer to?

If you search "pendant ideale" (reversing the order of the words), you will find that "ideale" is used as a modifier of pendant, supporting your second hypothesis.
