I think this is a specific term from semiotics. I am not sure what the English equivalent is but I am pretty sure it is not "contents." It appears in my text several times along with valori and significati as a kind of catchphrase. For example:

"...che l’opera possa comunicare al fruitore in maniera corretta tutti i suoi valori, significati e contenuti."

"in quanto i valori, i significati e i contenuti che ammiriamo con tanto interesse nelle opere si danno alla nostra fruizione solo attraverso ai materiali costitutivi con i quali sono indissolubilmente legati."
