His knowledge of light and tone is reminiscent of Caravaggio.

His paintings are almost always recognizable for the dramatic contrast between an intensely dark and somber background and an interest in playing with the effects of light.

Caravaggesque lighting/atmosphere

Explanation:

Caravaggesque is a word used in art history. The other option would be to go with 'chiaroscuro' which Caravaggio is known for.

a glow with a Caravaggesque flavor

Explanation:
I'm late to the game but thought I would suggest using "glow" if the paintings are primarily dark. Also, this formulation keeps the idea of "sapore" though you can certainly do without.
