Italian term or phrase: segni (rapidi, decisi ....)
I'm wondering about the best way to translate "segni" in this sentence, taken from an article about the Italian painter/sculptor Nane Zavagno.

Signs? Symbols? Something else? Any help appreciated!

Nondimeno Zavagno sa bene che tutto parte dal disegno e dunque anche le sue opere scultoree nascono inevitabilmente nello spazio astratto di un foglio grazie a segni rapidi, decisi, sicuri, volitivi: sulla superficie della carta prende di volta in volta forma un’idea che poi per giustapposizione di piani, di superfici di dimensioni sensibili si materializzerà nell’opera.

Explanation:
The word "mark" can be used to describe an enormous variety of lines, strokes, shapes, etc on paper or anything else. Very handy for this kind of artsy text.
