Italian term or phrase: ne andava dell’io
Non dicevano gli action painters che con il gesto ne andava dell’io?
È un susseguirsi, in queste opere, di fatti, ricordi, ritorni del rimosso, condensazioni di esperienze visive: un dipingere, simile al sogno ad occhi aperti di cui parla Freud.
I'd appreciate an opinion on the meaning of this phrase. It is talking about Action Painting.
Thanks very much in advance.

...[the gesture] implied unfettered personal expression?

Explanation:
Is a bit long-winded, but is one summary of the action painters' belief - see reference provided. Here I think you are obliged to make some reference to what these painters considered the gesture to be, hence the verbose solution. But it does link to source and also has some explanation. You will find many possibilities to define action painting, it is difficult to choose only one.

Ne andava dell'io
As an expression, this equals to "si tirava in ballo" or phrases to that effect, meaning 'the self was at stake/involved'. At least, that's how I read it. Which is consistent with the idea behind action/gestural painting.

'In Pollock’s case the brush might be a dried one, or a stick, dipped in the paint and trailed over the canvas. He also poured direct from the can. The idea was that the artist would physically act out his inner impulses, and that something of his emotion or state of mind would be read by the viewer in the resulting paint marks. De Kooning wrote: ‘I paint this way because I can keep putting more and more things into it – drama, anger, pain, love – through your eyes it again becomes an emotion or an idea.’

'The term "gestural painting", also known as "gesturalism", is used to describe a method of fine art painting characterized by energetic, expressive brushstrokes deliberately emphasizing the sweep of the painter's arm or movement of the hand. In other words, the brushwork in a gesturalist painting expresses the artist's emotions and personality just like a person's gestures reflect their feelings in everyday life. Gesturalism also emphasizes the physical act of painting itself, drawing attention to the "process of creating".'

Pls also consider De Kooning's quote in the first ref. as highlighted.
