Italian term or phrase: códice illuminato
First of all, please note that Italian is not one of my working languages, but I understand that "atelier" is a workshop and a cognate of the French word. These three workshops appear in an article I am translating from Spanish, about museum activities for schools based on heritage. I know that the first two are about mosaics and sculpture in stone, respectively, but I am puzzled as to the exact meaning of the third (códice illuminato).

“atelier di mosaico, el atelier di scultura di piedra, el atelier di códice illuminato”,

agree  Charlotte Fleming: Even codexes (books) we’re hand-written. “Illuminated manuscript” is a more common expression than “illuminated codex” IME.

-> Yes- my first option was "codex" (or codices for the plural) but I decided that "codex/codices" may be a little too specialistic for that particular source text

agree  Lisa Jane: Yes a codex is a book, a manuscript can also be on a scroll. .https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Codex

agree  Mark Pleas: Yes, not every manuscript is a codex. Manuscripts can be in a variety of forms, such as loose sheets, scrolls, and codices. Likewise, while all illustrated manuscripts are "illuminated", not all illuminated manuscripts have "illustrations."

-> Thank you Mark. I did think illumintion = illustration but I'll take your word for it.
