Italian to English translations [PRO]
Bus/Financial - Law (general) / Canon law, Ecclesiastical law
Italian term or phrase: fondazione pia autonoma
I am translating a legal/financial document relating to a "fondazione pia autonoma" based in the Vatican.
I have found this definition in a legal dictionary: "Enti istituiti mediante lasciti di beni mobili ed immobili effettuati con donazione o testamento, cd. pia fondazione autonoma, che si distingue dalla pia fondazione non autonoma, in cui i lasciti sono effettuati ad enti già esistenti [vedi Lasciti pii]" but am not certain how to translate it into English. My initial instinct would be to call it something like a "religious charitable trust" but I don't think that would be right either.

Any other ideas would be gratefully received!

In the text the term is written in italics and "virgolettato" so I think it is OK to do the same with the English

Notes to answerer
Asker: Canon law is always a bit of a minefield, so finding this "official" translation from the Vatican is a relief! I have to admit that I would have gone with Phil and used "independent", but if they use autonomous that is OK.

agree  philgoddard: We don't have the context, so it may need to be reproduced in Italian and followed by this translation. You could say "independent" to avoid having two words ending in "- ous".

BrE: Independent Religious Foundation

Explanation:
In E&W Euqity & Trusts terms, this - apart from the official translation - looks like a public religious charity or independent religious trust - best avoid association for reasons that need not be canvassed here.

Example sentence(s):
  • Private independent foundations are distinct from private family or corporate foundations in that an independent foundation is not governed by the benefactor, the benefactor’s family or a corporation.

Notes to answerer
Asker: Thanks, but the association is extremely clear and is to the Catholic Church (and more specifically the Jesuits) so I think I'll stick with Emiliano's suggestion!
