This is the description by the son of a celebrated artist, who was murdered. The son has been describing his relationship with his father over the years and also his quest to eventually find the murderer.

I do not understand this phrase in the context. The sentence reads:

Quando [Mxxx] ha cercato per dirmi che [artist] era morto, li per li ho pensato che se ne era andato tranquillo nel suo letto, in seno alla vita che aveva voluto vivere e che aveva vissuto. [Mxxx] era disperato, lo lucido, nei primi momenti.
Mi sono attivato subito per salvvaguardare il corpo. ....
