Al centro della Cappella è oggi collocato il magnifico Reliquiario di San Jacopo, capolavoro assoluto dell’oreficeria sacra tardogotica, datato 1407 e riferibile a Lorenzo Ghiberti e alla sua bottega. L’elegantissima struttura del reliquiario, in argento dorato, si sviluppa da una base molto articolata in forme architettoniche su cui si innesta una guglia che si slancia verso l’alto fra i due angeli rappresentati in gesto d’offerta. L’opera ha subìto un rimaneggiamento più tardo con l’inserzione, nella parte alta della guglia originale, di una rinascimentale pisside in argento dorato e cristallo che ora contiene la preziosa reliquia dell’Apostolo Giacomo di Zebedeo. Anche le urne sostenute dalle mani degli angeli sono più tarde, certamente posteriori al 1630. Nell’ampolla centrale in stile tardo gotico vi è la reliquia di Santa Maria Salomè, moglie di Zebedeo e madre degli Apostoli Giacomo e Giovanni; mentre nell’urna del basamento si trova il cuscino con le ceneri dei santi titolari fondatori della Chiesa Cattedrale.
