Il tempo "spazializzato" è quello della meccanica, della fisica, in parole povere, della scienza. Per spiegare il concetto Bergson cita ad esempio una collana di perle, tutte uguali e distinte fra loro. Il tempo come "durata" è invece riferito alla vita spirituale; è fatto da momenti irripetibili fra loro; anche se noi volessimo ricrearli, sarebbe impossibile. Il tempo come "durata" è pertanto costituito da momenti che si sommano fra loro; è concreto ed è interiore. Si potrebbe paragonare ad un gomitolo di filo che cambia continuamente e cresce su se stesso. Proprio per questa ragione il tempo come "durata" è auto-creazione continua e libertà, mentre quello "spazializzato" è astratto ed esteriore, tanto da essere definito da Bergson "concetto bastardo".
