Già il 23 Maggio del 1601 fu scritta una lettera all’Arcivescovo di Messina dove si indicava che la costruzione della chiesa non poteva essere portata a compimento per mancanza di fondi. Gli antichi rettori si avvalevano allora solo dei lasciti delle famiglie più ricche di Castiglione come i ...... In seguito, per la fabbrica, si ricorse all’apporto economico della Confraternita delle Anime Sante del Purgatorio, fondata nel 1605. Questa Confraternita tuttavia, detta anche dei Bianchi o dei Trentatré, poteva avere solo un tale numero di associati scelti tra l'aristocrazia locale.
