Als Laiin würde ich mir das so vorstellen:
Der Baum wird gespalten zu Spaltholz, was die natürliche Struktur berücksichtigt, wenn der entsprechende Handwerker seine Arbeit gut macht: er geht da kaputt, wo der Zusammenhalt der Fasern schwächer ist und bei dem erhaltenen Stück handelt es sich um stabiles und elastisches Material.
