Creo que sería una categoría superior a la de mozzo (grumete) Sería a finales de 1901 cuando la prestigiosa Compañía Trasatlántica realizaba una campaña en Menorca solicitando marineros, timoneles, mozos y grumetes para su flota de vapores. Estas compañías llegaron a tener enrolados en sus flotas a muchos tripulantes isleños. Con esta campaña cubrió la ausencia de muchos de sus tripulantes que se encontraban en huelga.
