Japanese to English translations [PRO]
Energy / Power Generation
Japanese term or phrase: 価格
I can't quite work out if 'price' is adequate here, since it refers to the amount of money that can be made by selling the item, rather than how much is paid by the consumer.

Any suggestions appreciated :)

 そんな事態を避けるためには、未利用の間伐材などの活用を促す仕組みをつくることが重要となる。間伐材は価格が安いため、切ったまま山に放置されてきた。それを使う流れが生まれれば、森林の荒廃や災害の防止にもつながる。

English translation:price
Explanation:
As the asker says, the writer is presumably ultimately interested in how much money can be made by selling the item (the profit margin), in other words the price less the cost, so 'The profit margin for thinnings is low' would probably work.

However I think 'price' would work just as well here and would be a closer translation of the original. Also, reading the rest of the article I can see that it goes on to mention that increased prices, compared with other types of wood, are to be offered for such material when used to produce energy. Presumably the price being offered would also be higher than the current (low, uneconomic) market price. So I would stick with 'price' throughout.
